What is NHAMFT?

The American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), an international professional organization founded in 1942, represents the professional interests of more than 23,000 marriage and family therapists throughout the United States, Canada and abroad. The New Hampshire Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (NHAMFT) is the New Hampshire division of AAMFT.

NHAMFT is a nonprofit, organization dedicated to promoting the well-being of families, couples, individuals, and businesses through the advancement of the profession and practice of marriage and family therapy in the State of New Hampshire.  As a multidisciplinary organization made up clinical, student, and associate members of AAMFT, the New Hampshire Association for Marriage and Family Therapy promotes and helps maintain high professional standards of ethics and practice for its members. It encourages continued professional education, and works cooperatively with the
New Hampshire Board of Mental Health.

What is Marriage and Family Therapy?

In marriage and family therapy, the unit of treatment isn't just the person - even if only a single person is interviewed - it is the set of relationships in which the person is embedded.

Marriage and family therapists treat a wide range of serious clinical problems including: depression, marital or couple problems, anxiety, individual psychological problems, and child-parent problems.

  • The NH Board of Mental Health Practice has recently proposed and distributed the following rule revisions Mhp 300-500Mhp 100, and Mhp 200.   Please review the proposed changes, as many of them impact all mental health providers, while there are also changes specific to the licensure process for Marriage and Family Therapists.  There was a public hearing on the rules on October 31, 2008

Here is a brief review of the rule adoption process:

    -       Once the rules are released, a public hearing is set to gather comments from the professionals governed by the rules and the public.
    -       The BMHP then takes the comments and decides which changes to adopt.
    -       The BMHP submits the rules to the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (JLCAR) for final hearing.  JLCAR can decide at that time to approve,
conditionally approve, or object to the final proposed rules.
    -       If JLCAR approves the rules, then they are set and become our practice rules.  Any changes made after that point would require legislative action.
    -       If JLCAR conditionally approves or objects to the rules, the BMHP needs to take the rules back and make changes.
    -       Professionals can present oral testimony at both the public and JLCAR hearings.  In addition, written testimony can also be submitted.
